Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is an eye condition that affects the development of blood vessels in the retina of premature babies. It occurs when these blood vessels grow abnormally, potentially leading to retinal damage or detachment if the condition progresses without appropriate treatment.

ROP may not show noticeable symptoms during its early stages, making regular eye screening essential for babies born prematurely or with low birth weight. In advanced cases, it can cause abnormal eye movements, white pupil appearance, reduced vision or even permanent blindness.

At Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital, our Retinopathy of Prematurity services focus on early detection, careful retinal assessment and timely intervention to reduce the risk of serious vision complications in premature infants.

The process begins with a specialized retinal examination to evaluate blood vessel development and determine the stage of the condition. Depending on the findings, our ophthalmologists recommend appropriate management, which may include regular monitoring, laser treatment or other medical and surgical interventions to protect the baby's developing vision.
